Waltz with Bashir is at the Belcourt from January 30th.
I recommend you see it – a war documentary shot in an innovative style – the interviewees, participants in yet another war, were recorded and then animated, (yet not rotoscoped – thank goodness), to impressive effect.
The style is intense, hallucinatory – done in the style of a graphic novel. Which perfectly suits this story of men – or more accurately little boys – who can’t really do anything – can’t stop daddy from hurting someone – and desperately miss their girlfriends, (aka mommies).
It’s a great film – and, Spoilers Ahoy, leads up to a devastating ending, (actually I won’t reveal the end in detail- only say that New Yorker film critic Anthony Lane is wrong when he writes “I know what Folman wants to do here, but it strikes me as a mistake”, the ending is EXACTLY what it should be – we see the effects these boys have on women and children – and it is SHOCKING – rightly so).
