Professor Dr. Gareth Higgins has been trying to get me to see ‘The Visitor’ for ages, (it made his top-10 list this year). I was always planning to, but now I have a special incentive as it’s screening this Thursday at 6pm at Vanderbilt – Rand Hall, Room 220.
It’s all part of ‘Nashville Says No to English Only’. You see, apparently, even with the national collapse of major industries and infrastructure, rising unemployment, and, here in Nashville, cut-backs in public transportation, this guy thinks our money, ($300,000 for this special election??), is best spent mandating that city business be conducted in English. Cause you know it’s a huge problem what with all the foreigners taking over our businesses and demanding city workers speak in French, Farsi, Urdu or Spanish.
Wait a minute. Is that happening?
Hmm…normally I’d say it’s all an elaborate art prank cause obviously our real problems are so much more pressing than our invented ones, but no, it seems that Eric Crafton, (he who also proposed to reduce the public’s speaking time in front of the City Council during zoning meetings – beginning to get the picture?), feels this is important.
Well he’s full of it.
So if you’re in Nashville and want our public servants to devote their time to doing something actually constructive, (a resolution declaring ‘Merry Christmas’ the official greeting instead of ‘Happy Holidays’ – really Eric?), vote against the English Only law – early voting is happening now – you have till January 22nd.
Oh and go see The Visitor. I hear it’s in English.
¡Un qué asno mudo!
