The Good Dr. Higgins is insistent that we review the reboot of ‘The Taking of Pelham One Two Three’, ‘The Taking of Pelham 123′ for this week’s show.
Dear Listeners – this prospect fills me with dread.
A film obviously made by feeding ‘Swordfish’ and ‘Inside Man’ into Microsoft’s new search engine ‘Bing’ with a script polish by ‘Wolfram Alpha’ via ‘Scriptbot’, ‘The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3′, (why switch the words into numerals? why why why?), is the kind of movie that, like Transformers, I doubt I could make it more than 15 minutes into.
And yet.
The Good Dr. is, as I said, insistent.
So this post is a plea. Dr. Higgins – the redoubtable Karina Longworth has already reviewed ‘The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3′ on her Spoutblog:
THE TAKING OF PELHAM 123 Review
Can’t we say that’s good enough?

(Re: the image above, ‘Les Pirates Du Metro’? = best film title, ever)
You really shouldn't have to bother with it, Tony Scott hasn't been the same since he started trying to be “hip and cool” with his beyond annoying camera tricks, and changing film-stocks, and ridiculously incomprehensible action scenes. Its as if he's going “Well, you know, this is a good narrative story with some intense emotional conflicts, but what would really make it better would be if the camera was spinning around them at half-crank, cutting to random street traffic for a split second, then doing a closeup on a random object on the table while a big “WHOOSH” sound-effect plays on the soundtrack”. Its a shame too, he made Crimson Tide, which is one of my favorite submarine movies. You know, now that I think about it, I actually hope you go through with it, I suspect the discussion will be hilariously entertaining.
Has Gareth himself not walked out films, perhaps or perhaps not recommended by you for the purposes of TFT?
I would be curious if you guys were to also review the original along with the new, as I had never heard of the original before the new movie was made (and is now being shown on some of the 'retro' movie channels – am going to try and watch).
With all due respect to the Good Dr. Higgins, I have to agree that this inevitable disappointment should be avoided. Could he be convinced to see something that could provide for more interesting conversation such as Sleep Dealer?
I think Gareth is just taking his revenge out on you Jett for making him see Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.
I just remembered though that technically, we collectively still owe Gareth one for The Mummy :).
you must do this. it is ur legacy.
plus, you know, it could be rife with symbolism that you and the good professor doctor can argue fervently about (c'mon there's got to be a 9-11 reference in there somewhere!!), much to our enjoyment and amusement!!
dance monkeys, dance…
kidding!!! ;)
