Remember this guy? He used to be funny.
We investigate what happened on TFT 50 coming later this week: our review of all ALL the Pink Panther films including the little seen ‘Inspector Clouseau’ starring Alan Arkin as the eponymous detective.
If there’s any Pink Panther business you’d like Gareth and I to investigate on this week’s show let us know.
I know – what happened to him?
I'm guessing you guys would address this, but growing up, as a kid, I first associated “Pink Panther” with the cartoon – and when I saw the movie, I also assumed the cartoon character would be somehow featured in the movie (of course, he wasn't, but Peter Sellers was great)….I seem to recall the cartoon animal appearing in the credits? But the movies came before the creation of the cartoon? Which one spawned from which?
yes, the cartoon was spin-off from the film – is this the only time a TITLE SEQUENCE has spawned a series in it's own right??
If it's not too late, I *demand* you recognise The Pink Panther Strikes Again as the best one. In fact, it's almost the only re-watchable one, even though the general wisdom is that the first and A Shot in the Dark are best/the only good ones.
Also, discuss The Life and Death of Peter Sellers while you're at it please. That's a damn-fine film too. Re-watch until you agree!
we haven't recorded the show yet – so it's not too late -
re: Pink Panther Strikes Again = it's the one i've seen the most – and am actually not re-watching for this ep – will be seeing the one they cobbled together after sellers die, the beninni one, the arkin, the other sellers and the martins + don't know if we'll be getting to The Life and Death as it's a Pink Panther Special and not a Peter Sellers one – though of course he deserves a show as well ;)
Yeah but, a good chunk of that movie relates Seller's view of the Pink Panther movies, not to mention his behaviour on-set with Blake Edwards (an amalgam of various anecdotes no doubt) and some of the furore on how he was seen as “stealing” the first PP from David Niven. Although the movie is a fiction, a lot of it is probably more true than the truth.
you have a valid point there – but the show would get too long and out of control if we added even more stuff to discuss ;) (+ i didn't find the film that interesting = a well made 'made for tv' pic that got theatrical distribution in some areas – and well, eh).
+ am not so sure about Stanley Tucci's Kubrick.
Ok but do check it out again, if not for this show. It's vastly underrated. Much better than “made for tv” and very rewatchable. It's one of those that gets better the more you see it.
It's a pity Geoffrey Rush wasn't a few years younger when playing, but other than that his performance is flawless.
As for Tucci/ Kubrick… It's not like he was in it very long, but anyway, I see most of the characters in the movie more as “Sellers' view of” them than deliberate historical accurate depictions. In fact “Sellers” plays most of the parts also himself at one stage or another. For all the upfront gimmickry of the multiple roles, its a very subtle film on many levels.
It also features the funniest “plop” moment on film.
In fact, all the fictional funny parts are very “Sellers”. It's like they were channelling Peter.
Hmm. I think I'm convincing myself… I don't think you can have a proper discussion on The Pink Panther movies without some proper talk on Peter Sellers himself. Anyway, he's faar more interesting than all the movies put together. :)
