Gareth and I are both huge fans of the work of director Stanley Kubrick:

And so it is to be expected that we both have a copy of the original, (who wants the small size version – pfffft), beautifully put together Taschen ‘The Stanley Kubrick Archives’.  At 544 pages, (with frames of 2001 included), this retrospective of Kubrick’s career would seem to the definitive “official” bit of Kubrickiana that every collector must have – but oh, no my friend.

Stanley Kubrick’s Napoleon: The Greatest Movie Never Made (Hardcover)

Uh-huh, a 700 dollar, 2626 page monster tome that contains ten books within it – all documenting that most infamous of unmade films:

Tucked inside of a carved-out book are all the elements you need to imagine what Kubrick’s film about the emperor might have been like. Along with the fascimile of Kubrick’s final draft of the screenplay are 10 individual books exploring the various chapters of the director’s work on the project: writing, research, costume design, location scouting, budgeting, and correspondence. The text includes the complete original treatment, an essay examining the screenplay in a historical context, an essay by Jean Tulard on Napoleon in cinema, and a transcript of interviews Kubrick conducted with Oxford professor Felix Markham. At once an art object, historical document, and artistic statement, this unique publication offers readers a chance to experience the creative process of one of cinema’s greatest talents as well as a fascinating exploration of the enigmatic figure that was Napoleon Bonaparte.

It’s not in the TFT budget right now to purchase ‘Stanley Kubrick’s Napoleon: The Greatest Movie Never Made (Hardcover)’; am going to have to find a way to make this site pay.

That's a lot of TFT+ episodes :) or hopefully it ends up a library somewhere nearby.

  2. Don't worry. It's less than $600 already. By the end of the year it'll be $300 – $350. You mark my words.
Then by the end of next year it will be available to internet hounds for around $100. That's when I'll point it out to Mrs. Rumm as a viable Christmas present (from her to me that is of course).

Take the archives for instance -now available for as little as 39euros to some of us.

I paid twice that a year or two ago at the same site -and it was a steal then. It's robbery _not_ to pay for it at that price!

Hmmm…must petition the Nashville Public Library immediately!

Yeah – but that link is for the 'small' version – the only one that they're printing now – us purists only like the original!

  5. Hm. Are you sure it's the small version? The one I got from there is definitely not the small version. It's a “break your back book” if you're not in the right position in fact.
I tried reading it on the toilet but that didn't last very long.

The one in that link looks the same from the photo …AH I just spotted something.. Year : 2008.
    By gum you're right Jett!
I'm sure it's a lovely book anyway, but they should definitely make it clear this is the toilet-friendly version. Might get them more sales in fact. :)

39euros wouldn't pay for the book if the pages were blank if it was the proper one.

Still, my point remains… The Napolean set will be $100 – $150 by the end of next year. The BIG one.

By the way, I read the script a while back. I'd love to have seen that movie, but of course Stanley would have made it even better than mere words or a static script could describe. I doubt even the Napolean 'book' as it is now could approach what would have occurred on the set and how things would have evolved organically, physically, metaphysically, unconsciously, subconsciously from that.
