yes, jett, see it. why? because i'm a sadist and enjoy watching other's pain. >:D
Kurosawa has Sex and The City (not once, but twice).
Why do I like this podcast so much? ;)
Dear god I endured the trailer for SATCii twice while waiting for movies I was willing to PAY to see. I will, so help me I will, listen to Episode #132 in its entirety (got that, Gareth?) but I will do so only in hopes of hearing the roast of all roasts.
I also hope 'greek' and 'splice' reviews aren't overwhelmed in the process.
Oh and I ALSO hope..
..the little TFT website sidebar teaser of SATCii being essentially a 'pro-muslim, pro-middle east' work reveals itself to be an intentionally satirical/sardonic/cynical comment about an imaginary, non serious, pop cultural crossroads where Islam Meets The West.
I've just begun my iTunes download of #132.
I must go now.
as far as I know Gareth is completely serious – he did genuinely seem to love it.

I'm happy to accept responsibility for helping to convince Gareth to see Splice – due to my duplicitous suggestion to Jett that he should lie to Gareth about the content. :) Of course, I'm happy that both hosts seemed to like Splice in one degree or another.
Also, I'm curious as to whether the reaction to SatC2 has made Gareth go back and watch the other SatC movie, or even all 23 seasons of the original show?
Lastly, I vote for Jett Loe to NOT see Sex and the City 2. Not because I hate or have negative feelings about the film; but because no one should have to watch a movie they don't want to. Plus, he's only bound to come back and try to one-up Gareth's movie-poster worthy quote.
Jett, I want you to see Sex and the City 2. I haven't seen it and don't intend to (which may change), but as it stands, The Film Talk mystifyingly endorses the film by default. So, if you hate it, I'd love to hear you both talk about the empowerment issue and the treatment of Muslims (my friend who did see it IMed me that it should have run with a PSA apologizing to, among others, gays, women, Muslims, and the disabled). I'd also like to hear you talk about the consensus idea that this is a commercial for conspicuous consumption. And if you love it or don't but see Gareth's point–speaking of which, I buy that negative reviews are easily funny, but Matt Zoller Seitz is a much deeper thinker than your average newspaper press–then I may just have to go see it, too.
Also, Houston, the fourth largest city in this country, has a mind-bogglingly sparse film culture, but we also have Tex-Mex if that's any enticement. Needless to say, I'm very intrigued by the teased details of Gareth's movie. Congratulations!
wait, i have to interject :P i'm from Houston – it is NOT a sparse film culture, independent-ly film speaking (my brother was in two just this year alone)…plus, robocop II was filmed there! ;) but seriously…it's more arty than mainstream i admit, but the film culture is there, check out Montrose and the Museum district! :D
(and tex-mex should be legal currency!!!!)
Gareth, your comments after the Seamus Heaney poem about the violence of growing up and the problem of connection for our generation were superb. I've been brooding on this topic much lately (esp. the transition siblings who are close undergo when each of them begin getting married). Just beautiful. Thanks for your words.
Thanks Maz – kind of you to say, and glad we're talking about things that the listener wants to discuss.
I agree with Gareth's take on SATCii. This drivel epitomizes the utterly soul-less, amoral potential of western industrial culture. By virtue of the contrast it is therefore a celebration of middle eastern muslim popular culture. Of course that would also make it a celebration of ancient Hittite culture, et al. – including possibly the civic virtues of those old-time favorite getaway destinations, Sodom and Gomorrah.
(p.s. don't see it jett .. thank me for this tip with a copy of episode 12)
Dear tftpete
I think you're on to something there.
Peace, GH
A question for Jett regarding Sex and the City, did you watch the 6 seasons on HBO? In comparison both the first and second films are tame. So, if you are not interested in that 23 & 1/2 hours of oftentimes brilliant and sparkling comedy why would you see the second in a series of spin off films? That being said I saw the film as a double feature with Get Him to the Greek and in my opinion that was in no real way a superior film. I like Gareth am disinclined to see scary films, so, I did not watch Splice before listening to the podcast, though I may catch it down the road. All this being said the format of The Film Talk for the most part up to this point has been both you and Gareth watching films and having conversations about them. So, I vote for you to see Sex and the City (if you can stomach it) and Gareth watching at the very least F for Fake and as at least a small segment of your next show revisiting those films which got the short shrift of one of the co-hosts not seeing the film before the original discussion.
Actually as you said Get Him to the Greek gets points for having Colm Meaney in it, but so does Sex and the City 2 for having Penelope Cruz in a bit part and having Raza Jaffrey playing a butler with dignity and grace which makes one wish for him to get more parts. By any chance does your wife want to go see Sex and the City? Maybe seeing a film together would be a fun way to endure seeing the films you are reviewing for the show?
Please Jett go and watch SATC2. Why? Because you're a ladie's man.
I cast my vote in favor of Jett screening SATC2: SOT. Why? Well, why do I listen to the Film Talk? Because, allegedly, “the conversation never ends.” And if only one member of TFT has seen the film in question it fails to be a conversation. It is often an illuminating, hilarious monologue, but it ain't The Film Talk. C'mon, Jett! My 3 dollars have spoken!
Also, I would really, really, really, really love for Gareth to expand on how SATC2 can be both “most pro-Muslim, pro-Middle East” pop-cultural doo-dad of the last decade AND a sly subversion of Islam and the cultural values of the Middle East?? I'm not saying it's impossible, I'm saying I'm intrigued.
Also, somewhat surprised you guys like 'Get Him Into The Greek' so much. I thought it was…fine. Except for the fact that the film's humor had a curious flatness to it throughout, even when the jokes were clever or well-delivered. And maybe this is just me being an asshole, but why would Jonah Hill's character, a seemingly hip music aficionado who is into Radiohead and the Pixes, worship a glam-rock/ cock-rock cartoon character like Aldous Snow?
Voting for Jett to please see SATC II – I'd like to hear how your thoughts compare and contrast to Gareth's take on the movie.
In that case, please see it Jett. Just so we can get a little sanity here!! (Hopefully).
geez…okay i give up…i'm changing my vote and riding the popular wave of this web discussion: i now say JETT should GO SEE satc2 (and i want to make it perfectly clear this change has nothing to do with the fact i haven't received episode 12 yet, even if that would have been nice). go hittites!! and can anyone tell me when the polls officially close on the jett/satc2 voting in case *ahem* i feel like changing my vote again?
The way it's looking re: listener feedback – i just may have to go see SATC2 – am not sure when our 'cut-off' time is for this – probably just before we record the next ep – so folks have got till Thursday to get their votes in!
Yeah, go and see it Jett. I'm genuinely interested in what your take on Gareth's take is.
This appears to be the minority opinion, but … I respect Jett too much to push him into seeing SATC2.
Consider the context: Two weeks ago, he sat through “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time”, and this week he will (presumably) sit through “The A-Team” and/or “The Karate Kid”. Isn’t that enough dreck for one month? (Remember, people, he ain’t getting paid for this.)
I’ll concede that Gareth may be accurate in his review. Perhaps this film is ironic and self-aware. Perhaps it does say something worthwhile about female empowerment in a regressive patriarchal society. Perhaps it does critique – rather than celebrate – the debauchery and cultural arrogance of its lead characters.
But judging from the trailers and clips, the film appears to fail in at least one respect: it’s not very funny. First and foremost, a comedy should be funny. Good intentions do not automatically redeem a bad film.
As an enthusiastic supporter of the show, may I gently suggest that Jett’s time and resources might be better served elsewhere. Personally, I would rather hear a discussion of an old classic than a second dose of SATC2 analysis. In the past month, Criterion has released shiny new blu-ray editions of Ford’s ‘Stagecoach’, Lang’s ‘M’, and Godard’s ‘Vivre sa Vie’. Any one of these films would make a more interesting subject than ‘SATC2 Revisited’.
So Jett, I say skip SATC2. Or at least wait for the DVD. Instead, gird yourself for “The A-Team”, and then cleanse your mental palette by revisiting an established classic. You’ll feel better in the morning.
You sir are a SAINT.
thank you.
i've spent part of today trying to convince gareth that i really really really don't need to see THE A-TEAM or KARATE KID – but alas, he's already screened THE A-TEAM so am duty bound to attend.
+ you mention M – have you seen THE TESTAMENT OF DR. MABUSE? now THAT'S cinema film my friend.
Was anybody else who saw the “Fred & Ginger” scene in the auditorium in Splice reminded of a “Gallagher” show?
If it is torture for Jett to go see Sex and the City, stick to your guns and don't go see it. Maybe let this be a sort of turning point and mark the slate clean by forgetting about how Gareth was forced to see Mummy Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (or whatever it was called), and all the other films that each of you regret seeing or just skipped watching in the first place. You say that you agree to disagree, well do you want to agree ahead of time which films you are going to screen and review or decide that sometimes one of you will review a particular film while the other refrains from screening or reviewing, but without recrimination as you planned ahead of time to proceed with one reviewer only.
jett, i don't respect you, GO SEE IT! ;)
(kidding!)
seriously, though, i am very interested in your take on what the movie may actually be doing or attempting to accomplish. I saw an interview with Michael Patrick King (the director) and he explained his purpose for SATC2 as, “How funny to put samantha, over-sexualized, in abu dabi!” He was witty (and apparently once a stand up comedian) but not overly DEEP. So, with your artist goggles on, I, and i think a lot of your listeners, would love to see if there's this hidden depth, this hidden meaning, that we're missing. Why not go see it for ourselves and use our own judgment? Cuz you got the mad skillz…seriously! you have film school education-ness – like a wine taster who's also a winemaker, you can see complexities that we, the un-educated plebeianic masses ;), may have missed! Which is ultimately the purpose of the podcast, otherwise why listen?
and i'll be honest, what i fear is that what the great dr professor higgins takes as pro-muslim may actually be relief that for once the 'arabic,' 'asian,' or 'middle-eastern' characters are not being used to perpetuate violent stereotypes. While that may be a plus and possibly even a small teeny step in the right direction, relegating them to simply personality-less 'props' in scenes does not a pro-muslim film make. THIS is what i'd, personally, like to see your take on…
and ditto to the Testament of Dr Mabuse!
I say skip SatC2 and use the time to go see Exit Through the Gift Shop!
Good points from Eric Wheeler and all!
