I skipped the Single Man review since I didn't see the film yet. The Shutter Island review had some very good insights. I had some very faint inklings while watching S.I. that Scorsese might be dealing with specific ailments in the modern world in the story. Gareth's insights were very interesting and certainly added a layer to the film I didn't think was there at first. Although, these insights and Scorsese's attempts at the deeper subtext didn't raise the enjoyment of the film for me.
I avoided listening to the 'Shutter Island' section as I may still see that and don't want to hear spoilers. But I did listen to the 'A Single Man' section and fully agree with Jett and Gareth's take on it. Like them, the brief scene between Firth and Goode when they were both reading books had such convincing realism and truth in it that it stays in the memory.
Also, it probably helps me understand what Jett was saying about 'Up in the Air' and why he wasn't that crazy about it; in particular his comments about the lack of reality and portrayl of how adults really act. While I don't think 'A Single Man' is a perfect film, it is clearly superior on that basis.
Waited until I had seen both films before listening to this episode. I liked 'A Single Man' but was dissapointed by 'Shutter Island' so I would have liked to have heard Jett explaining his reservations about the latter.
