Did this episode really traverse the wide range of things film I thought it did? And is it true it all came on the heels of a podcast tightly focused on humping trash? Amazing. How do you do that?? It's enough to make me want to put some Jung into Jungelblood. Thanks…now I'm going to go find me F is for Fake – never seen it.
Hope you like F FOR FAKE = wonderful pic
not sure what was discussed about D. Hopper in the members only episode – but I did watch “Easy Rider” (not for the first time) this past weekend, and noticed (for the first time) how much influence Tarkovsky's “Rublev” and “Ivan's Childhood” had on the film. it could not have been unintentional. a few scenes and techniques were borderline copied and pasted. however, i very much appreciated the influence, and it definitely added a new layer of depth to D. Hopper's direction of the film….
We covered a lot of ground on the films of Hopper so didn't go into too much detail – you're right of course re EASY RIDER – the 'prayer' before Robert Walker Jr. (Charlie X and son of Robert Walker!! – immortal in STRANGERS ON A TRAIN), says “let's eat” can be seen as a direct 'lift' from the jester sequence in RUBLEV.
Kind of surprised that you guys didn't bring up the fact that not a single one of the leads in POP:SOT is actually Persian/Iranian. (Gyllenhaal is American/Swedish, Ben Kingsley's Indian/British, Arterton is British). As an Iranian myself, I keep wondering when fellow Iranians are actually going to get leading roles, particularly when a film is ostensibly set in our country.
Valid point Maz – in our defense there was so much wrong with POP:TSOT there just wasn't time to delve into all of it – we could mention it in the next show -(or feel free to call Ask The Film Talk if you want us to devote a segment to it) – jt.
