Tonight sees TFT’s first live coverage of the Oscars – we’ll be blogging as the show continues; and the podcast will be up in a day or two – but for now, we’ll cast our lot with some predictions:
Who’ll Win vs. Who We Like
Best Picture
Slumdog, of course will win; Gareth liked ‘Milk’ more, and ‘The Visitor’ was his favorite fiction film of the year; Jett says if ‘Benjamin Button’ wins he’ll move to Canada; if justice was served he’d give the award to ‘Che’
Best Director
Will go to Danny Boyle; Jett wants to see Loveleen Tanden, Boyle’s co-director honoured too. Gareth thinks Christopher Nolan’s work on ‘The Dark Knight’ deserves the kind of award they used to give to the shipping magnates of the late 19th century.
Best Actor
We both think Mickey Rourker will win, and deserves it just for staying alive; but The Film Talk’s own Best Actor award goes to singular Richard Jenkins, not only for ‘The Visitor’, but frankly for every performance he’s ever given. (Gareth says check out his work in ‘The Man Who Wasn’t There’ to see just one example of why he’s always at the top of his game.)
Best Actress
Kate Winslet, like so many Oscar winners, will be rewarded, not so much for her work in ‘The Reader’, but for not getting the statue for the right film in the past. We like her. But Gareth likes Anne Hathaway more this year.
Yes, that’s true. The version I wcathed was The Boat That Rocked and it was over 2 hours, which is the way I like it. If it’s longer there’s more room to investigate and gather info. >_0The music was good, though. Too bad the movie had nothing to do with it.
