Sigh…I though this podcast would comfort me, with Jett easing up a bit on Black Swan. Alas, the opposite happened. I disagree with Gareth’s new observation- I think you’re extrapolating a whole lot from not much. I don’t think that the horrific instance is played for comedy- I think it’s played for horror, and done in a manner that may be over the top, but is not insincere. Do you really think that scene is merely funny? I found it to be extremely disturbing further amplifying the idea of abuse suffered by the main character. And I challenge the notion that any film that puts us so firmly in the head of its protagonist can be as callous towards her as you imply.

And Jett, it seriously bummed me out to hear your thoughts on the film. Not because you didn’t care for it- but because it so utterly depressed you. For me, this was the film that made me excited about film from 2010 again. After the major buzzkill of The Social Network and feeling out of touch with everything, I was thrilled to be elated by a film. To hear you so utterly dispirited really bothered me for a few minutes. It can be quite hard to hear from that the recent film that felt most alive to me felt the opposite to someone I respect.

But I’m mostly with you on The King’s Speech (though Gareth’s argument about WWII as the myth of redemptive violence is not, on it surface, convincing.)

    • Jett Loe says:

Sorry buddy :( – am sad to hear you were bummed out by my feelings on a film that so viscously and vociferously offended me that i literally hissed at the end – all i can say is that of course all is subjective and for me the film’s absence of any sense of humour about itself really got to me – but that’s a very personal bugbear and should be treated as such.

The King’s Speech: “everything its makers wanted it to be” – love that comment, Jett, it says all that need be said. A jolly good film and a jolly good piece of royalist propaganda.

re: Black Swan. Don’t think that interrupted masturbation scene was played for laughs – though it could be argued all interrupted masturbation scenes probably should be.
