There are several sub genres of Christmas film; sounds like this falls into the comedy drama section (other examples include The Family Stone, Love Actually)
Other sub genres include;
Kiddy flicks – The Polar Express, The Grinch, The Santa Clause, The Nightmare Before Christmas etc
Comedy – Jingle All the Way, National Lampoons Christmas Vacation
Family heart warmers – Miracle on 34th Street, It's a Wonderful Life
And my personal favourite..
The Non-Christmas Christmas film – Brazil, Gremlins, Die Hard (1&2), Lethal Weapon
Of course many of these belong in the cross section sub genre of – Films that deserve to be burnt in hell.
Hmm…which ones deserve to be 'burnt in hell' I wonder?
'Jingle All the Way'?
'The Grinch'?
+ I love the idea of a mini-film-festival of Christmas Action Films = Die Hard / Lethal Weapon, etc. !
Good call, Tom.
How about the recently reviewed “Eyes Wide Shut”? A non-Christmas Christmas film, to be sure, but not in the Action sub-sub category the Maestro proposes. Christmas Sex Thriller Films? What would you call this?
I'd like to re-edit The Holiday (comedy drama sub genre) and remove all the scenes with the Jude Law / Cameron Diaz coupling. That way you'd just enjoy Kate Winslet and Jack Black and the whole thing would be over in 60mins – brilliant!
Interesting casting for Witherspoon's father, I thought. I wonder if a conscious decision or coincidence based on his real life circumstances with his own daughter/family? (don't want to say who because I don't know if it's a “spoilers ahoy” situation or not – I don't know if it's considered a 'cameo' or a full-fledged role in the film).
I had to sit through Jumanji this weekend, I suppose that would go under the kiddie category what with the Christmas party at the end but really should be filed under 'deserves to be burnt in hell'… oh so painful to watch as a double feature coupled with Spaceballs. Lord have mercy, who are these people I live with??
My all time favorite holiday film hands down is The Ice Storm. Wonderful film, haunting music, great performances. It's a gem!
Spaceballs. Does it have one laugh?
It has one:
The scene where they are at a diner, and one of the patrons has the old “alien-pops-out-of-the-stomach” bit, and the tiny alien puts on a top hat and begins to sing “Hello, My Baby” like the singing frog in the Warner Bros/Looney Toons cartoon.
That's it.
Can't give you that one, Phil. Not only is Spaceballs not funny, it actually gave me a stomach ache. I had to leave the room for fear of becoming physically ill. It could have been the green bean casserole but, no, I am pretty sure it was the Rick Moranis.
I'll bet if that stomach ache produced a dancing, singing alien, you'd be laughing it up…
This video of Christmas falls to the category of comedrama (comedy + drama).
Whatever happened to 'dramedy'?? ;)
I thought this was a cute movie. I really enjoyed the entire movie and did not doze off once during the movie. I think I really liked it because I could relate to the people in the movie. Not to mention, it kept me laughing the entire time because I could relate. I suggest you see this movie. It is not really bad at all, in my opinion.
