Have to agree with GH on this one. Funny People is definitely one of the best films I've seen this year. Sandler is a revelation, fulfilling the promise that was hinted at in Punchdrunk Love. This movie is funny throughout, but also a moving meditation on grief, greed, regret and all the other things that make us want to laugh to keep from crying. Very much the kind of film that sticks with you, making you want to watch it again to understand even more. There is something nearly Cassavetean about these characters and their flawed, failed interactions that is head and shoulders above the usual cliches and contrivances that substitute for real life in most Hollywood films.
I enjoyed much of 'Funny People', although I lost interest during the whole “love triangle-win-back-my-old-flame” part of the movie.
I would have been much more interested if the entire movie were about the relationship of the successful, yet miserable Sandler character and his struggling-to-make-it assistant Rogan character. Could have said much more about what materialism does to a person than diverted off course into a romantic sub-plot (or was that the main plot?).
I'm looking forward to both of these, Hurt Locker in particular – although I'm wondering if it'll be widely distributed here in the UK (or at least in the rural areas where I'm located). Moon still has reached Shropshire yet!!
Was interested about what GH said regarding films that you have enjoyed despite everyone else seeming to disagree with you. You DO start wondering if you got it wrong. I found that with Quantum of Solace, which practically everyone I spoke to hated it when I'd been really impressed. I'm still looking forward to seeing it again to try and figure out who was right!
