Full Frame Day 3: Roundup

the cove Full Frame Day 3: Roundup

Another sunny morning, another day of real life at the movies.  Full Frame becomes hypnotic  after the second day; you’re floating half a centimetre off the ground, gently bumping into Argentinian evangelical Christian prisoners, fashion magazine editors and their entourages, and undercover dolpin liberation movements.  And so we saw:

‘Unit 25′ – the closest thing to a fly on the wall film I’ve seen at Full Frame – an unobtrusive camera follows the lives of prisoners in a system where evangelical conversion allows entrance to a better class of jail.

‘The Cove’ – film of the festival so far, for me, at least.  This film will receive huge attention when it’s released in the summer, and we hope to return to it then.  It’s a wonderful, discovery-led piece about environmental degradation and the mistreatment of animals, mingled with the question of how nations should relate to each other in a post-imperial (?) world.  The fact that it’s directed by a National Geographic photographer also means that it contains some of the most gorgeous marine images I’ve ever seen.  We’ll review the film in detail on its release; for now I’ll say that the heist-like narrative makes ‘The Cove’ one of the most exciting films I’ve seen this year.

As the day went on, Full Frame returned, among other places to post-Katrina New Orleans for ‘Lower Ninth Ward’, the ‘Vogue’ production office in ‘The September Issue’, and ‘The Beaches of Agnes’ in Agnes Varda’s autobiographical film.
