Was listening back to our chat with Elliott Gould and decided to watch Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice again.
If you haven’t seen it Dear Listener you should – yes it’s a mainstream film that is of its time so can seem swamped with the same indulgence of other pics of that era; yet it tries tries tries to explain this indulgence, and selfishness – and on some fundamental level it succeeds; because of course no matter the year don’t we all need the same thing?
I dunno, guys. I tried, really I did. I got Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice from Netflix and watched it, and before long I couldn't get past the idea that I was watching a series of scenes spliced together from acting school. I could all but hear a cheesy director / acting coach saying things like “OK, now Ted, you're angry at Alice. Show me! Alice, you're heartbroken. Now, quick, Alice, show me angry! Ted you are now backing off. Tears!” And so on. It had some interesting ideas about the meaning of romantic love, marriage, men and women, and so on, and I can even accept that there was an element of 'breaking the fourth wall' winking-nodding going on, but it came across as a mess. Someone needed an editor, maybe two.
yikes! well, i hear what you're saying dale; re: the “cheesy” – that's kinda what i meant when i said “mainstream” in my post – the acting style can seem mannered and 'shouty-shouty' – yet i get a kick out the pic's incidental pleasures, (the same way i do out of Easy Rider – that which made it so au courant at the time now makes it dated – but i like that – it's like going to a record store and looking at vinyl or something).
