Here a little Halloween movie for you – recorded on the way to the 2010 Big Bear Horror Film Festival,
(the voice you hear in the back seat is actress Alisha Seaton - unfortunately as I got a ride from Alisha and her sister I really cannot comment on the film of hers showing at the fest: THE ECHO GAME – bias and all that ).
Speaking of the Big Bear Fest a big thank you to festival director Michael Coulombe for his hospitality during the proceedings. One of the irony’s of the horror film scene is that the people involved are some of the sweetest folks you’ll ever meet. Don’t believe me? Then check out the iPhone photos I snapped during the fest’s Saturday Night shindig:
The gentleman above was, as the kids of today say, “getting down”, to the strains of Inland Empire-based group Osology, (click the link to visit their Myspace page – yes, that’s right, Myspace still exists. Who knew?). Many people at the party enjoyed dancing on the stage with Osology – the photos below are the only ones that it is appropriate at this time to publish, (perhaps when community standards are relaxed some time in the future then other images can be released):
The gentleman caught in the act of disrobing in the photo above is actor Donnie Faught, one of the stars of the short film BLOCKHEAD screened at the fest. Is the film any good you ask? Well, let me put it this way – there is absolutely no reason why the director of BLOCKHEAD, John Francis Conway shouldn’t direct the next SAW film. He’s got that style down pat.
Anyhew, the music by Osology was great – at first having a Riverside hip hop band play in at the Big Bear cultural centre to a crowd of horror filmmakers and fans seemed to me like a completely random thing to do. But, darn-it, if it didn’t turn out to be a great evening.
The only problem with the Big Bear Horror Festival really is that I had such a good time that I barely saw any films. So many apologies to festival organizer Michael Coulombe – he gave me a press and all I have to show for it are the blurred photos and video you see here. To make up for it I present the photo of Michael below, (suitable for framing – you’re welcome).
Thanks again Mike, I trust that my lack of coverage of your wonderful fest will not in any way persuade you not to have me back next year. To everyone else I say: if you love horror films, or just getting out of traffic-clogged Los Angeles for a few days, you could do a whole lot worse than go to the Big Bear Horror Film Festival. I truly hope that these photos might in some small way persuade you to attend – see you in 2011!
(Special thanks to actress Alisha Seaton for the lift up to the fest – that’s her below with THE ECHO GAME director Brian Feeney):
I wish I could say more about THE ECHO GAME but alas I really do think there’s a conflict there – also Brian sat next to me during the screening which meant that I was worried about my reactions the whole time lest they give the wrong impression to the filmmaker – though, truth be told, I couldn’t stop myself from leaning over to Brian and chastising him during the ‘shower’ scene – if you’re seen the film then you know what I’m talking about – in fairness to Mr. Feeney he did say that the shower scene’s what got them the distribution deal for GAME, so there you go).
(Also, if you’re interested in the films mentioned in the video at top then check out my thoughts on THE TERMINAL MAN here:
‘The Terminal Man’ – The Greatest 70′s Sci-Fi Thriller You’ve Never Seen
and watch the brilliantly chilling A COLD NIGHT’S DEATH starring Robert Culp and, for once in his life, an underplaying Eli Wallach):

Michael is actually roommates with friends of mine – and I was really hoping to make it to the BBHFF…(You might have actually even met them.)
Anyway, the really scary part of Foul Play—which I’ve not seen—must be that is features both Brian Dennehy and Billy Barty.
make it to the BBHFF next year! :)
+ i haven’t gotten to any barty/brian scenes yet – i find it very hard to get past the dudley moore bedroom bit
Thanks for the clip – I got chills when Dudley Moore’s name came up on the screen.
The road you’re on looks like its been in a lot of Hollywood movies, or maybe all the roads in the Calif. Hills looks like that?
one of the first things you notice when living in LA = everywhere you look = been in the movies
