Special thanks to the fine folks at the ‘Nashville Scene’ who’ve just named us Best Film Podcast of 2009! Of course with great accolades come great responsibilities so Gareth and I will do our best to behave in a more adult and mature fashion from now on. Wish us luck.
Here’s what Scene Editor and fellow film critic Jim Ridley had to say about the show:
If you’ve never been accosted after a press screening by Nashville critic and filmmaker Jett Loe, who has the boundless enthusiasm of Tigger pouncing on Piglet, the podcast he co-hosts with Irish author Gareth Higgins is the next best thing. Week after week, they re-create the kind of animated conversation that makes you feel like an eavesdropper in a theater lobby. Their guests are consistently entertaining—David Thomson, Francis Ford Coppola, Glenn Kenny—but the real show is the byplay between two pals who remind a lot of listeners why they first fell in love with movies: so they could talk about them afterward.
I appreciate Jim’s words – in case you’re wondering why he uses the word “accosted” in the excerpt above…well, if you’ve listened to the last few episodes of TFT you’ll recall the whole ‘Bucket of Urine’ saga in which I made some impolitic comments about those who enjoyed the film ‘Zombieland’ – now, just imagine that instead of hearing it on a podcast you were ‘accosted’ by me after watching a pic and had to endure my possibly excessive ranting on the subject of whatever it was about the film that bothered the h**l out of me.
In Jim’s case the focus of my rage was of ‘The Curious Case of Benjamin Button’. Other folks have been subjected to hearing displeasure over such things as improper aspect ratios, the low-wattage bulbs in certain film projectors and the digital ‘youthening’ of Julia Roberts in ‘Duplicity’.
So to all of you who’ve had to deal me at the cinema I say: sorry.
I’m working on my various film-going foibles and hopefully, someday, l’ll be a bit more balanced in my critique of the movies and movie-going. To paraphrase what I wrote at the top of this post: wish me luck.
You are well-appreciated the way you are Jett! I'd hate to hear your opinions become diluted and generic. I mean definitely evolve as you see fit, but don't stamp yourself out!
Cheers Ana – i appreciate the support! :) (mind you, you've never had to sit behind me at the movies as as i sigh loudly at some perceived flaw of the film!)
Congrats guys, well deserved!
