In fact, I would up the ante and say that I found 'The New World' more compelling and poetically inclined than 'Badlands' (and I say that as a fan of the movie). It may have to do with the fact that I've always seen Badlands on a TV screen and I saw 'The New World' for the first time in a theater. I was mesmerized by the images of the natural world, the slow heartbreak of it all and yes, even the performances. I think you're right that people have a Colin Farrell block, but I thought his characterization fit well in the picture as a whole.

Hey Eric, I definitely agree. I absolutely loved 'The New World.' I think many of its detractors just can't get past the Colin Farrel element. But for my money, Malick's genius is just as present here as it is in 'Badlands.'

Agreed. I want to commend you for seeing the brilliance in 'The Royal Tenenbaums.' Although it received very favorable reviews upon its release, I feel there's a considerable backlash against the film because of its 'quirkiness' and association with hipsters. But, I honestly, genuinely believe it's a bonafide masterpiece. It's a transcendent work of cinema and one of the very few films I would call perfect. I can't find a single flaw in it. Brilliant, just brilliant.

Very interesting list, Gareth. I don't think I can go that high -- Yi Yi is my #1, with NCFOM in second -- but I went from total ambivalence on the film to it being without question in my own top ten (which, in the spirit of your post, is already shaping up to be a top 25). I need to revisit The Fountain. I never disliked it, but I remember being caught up in what I thought it might have been if Aronofsky got the full budget he wanted and wasn't tossed about.

Lot of great choices here. A lot of great choices I'm already (ever, ever so reluctantly) leaving by the wayside as I whittle my list down. Spotting In the Loop just brought back the pain of telling it "It's not you, it's me," even if it's guaranteed a spot in my top ten for this year.

I found this site by following a trackback of your linking my A.I. review, so I suppose it's fitting that it should be No. 1 on your list. So please accept my apologies, Curtis Hanson and Steve Kloves, for 'Wonder Boys' is the best film about regret and writing I've ever seen (and has the best Michael Douglas performance); Guillermo del Toro, who in 'The Devil's Backbone' imagined that rare thing - a horror movie that is also genuinely moving; Richard Linklater who made the most realistic and emotionally resonant sequel in 'Before Sunset'; and, remarkably enough, Steve Martin and Anand Tucker, who gave 'Shopgirl' some of the most beautiful visuals of Los Angeles, and told a compelling story flawed only by the fact that Mr Martin narrated as well as starred. There will be more, I am sure, but those are the ones I've been reminded of thus far.

The list's been up for a few days, which has granted enough time to consider the films I had forgotten – some egregious omissions, I'm afraid.
